故 이휘소(Benjamin Whisoh Lee, 1935~1977) 박사는 한국이 배출한 가장 대표적인 물리학자 중 하나로, 일제강점기에 태어나 19세에 미국으로 유학을 떠난 뒤 많은 학문적 성취를 이뤘습니다. 이론물리학 분야에서 활발한 연구 활동을 이어가던 그는 42세의 나이인 1977년, 페르미 연구소의 여름 심의회에 참가하기 위해 이동하던 도중 교통사고로 갑작스레 세상을 떠났습니다.
Dr. Benjamin Whisoh Lee (1935–1977) is one of the most representative physicists of Korea. He was born during the Japanese colonial period and achieved many academic achievements after studying in the United States at the age of 19. He continued his active research in theoretical physics. In 1977, at the age of 42, he suddenly died in a traffic accident while traveling to participate in the summer council of the Fermi Institute.
His research had a great influence on the field of particle physics in the late 20th century. He contributed to the emergence of the Higgs mechanism by calculating the renormalization of gauge theory through research on spontaneous symmetry breaking. Also in 1974, based on Sheldon's thesis that assumed the existence of a charm quark, he worked with his fellow scholars to predict the mass range of a charm quark. His research was directed toward pioneering the most advanced fields in the main flow of physics, and contributed to solving various theoretical difficulties in the physics world.
